Acupunture

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture is a gentle and minimally invasive treatment that most animals tolerate very well. The needles used are exceptionally fine and designed to pass smoothly between tissue fibers, causing little to no discomfort. While pets may occasionally feel a slight prick or pinch as a needle is placed, this sensation is brief and quickly fades.

Once the needles are in position, most animals relax deeply, often experiencing a sense of soothing warmth or calm. Many even fall asleep during their session, demonstrating just how comfortable and relaxing the process can be.

When performed by a skilled and trained veterinarian like Dr. Amy, acupuncture is a safe and effective way to support your pet's health. Dr. Amy has specialized training in veterinary acupuncture and will guide you through every step of the process, including what to expect after the treatment.

The most common response is a feeling of sleepiness or relaxation following a session. This is often a sign that your pet’s body is working to correct imbalances and responding positively to the therapy. In rare cases, there may be a temporary flare-up of symptoms within the first 48 hours, but this usually resolves quickly. These changes are natural and typically indicate that healing is underway, leading to noticeable improvements in your pet’s well-being.

How Many Sessions
Will My Pet Need?

The number of treatments depends on your pet’s health and how they respond to acupuncture. A typical plan may look like this:

  • Weekly sessions for the first 3–5 weeks

  • Gradual reduction in frequency as your pet’s condition improves

  • For ongoing concerns like arthritis, regular sessions can provide long-term comfort and better mobility
